The YBDSA believes it is important that members maintain their
knowledge of the industry, updating themselves on areas such
as new legislation, new technologies and enhancing their general
knowledge of the wide variety of boats and equipment that are
available. Brokers and surveyors are called upon to look at
boats ranging from the very old to the very new and need a broad
background to be able to provide their clients with the best
information on the boat they have or are thinking of buying.
The Association has a scheme for Continuous Professional Development
(CPD) and members gain points towards their CPD by attending
relevant courses or seminars, and also by research and practical
means.
We are also very aware of the benefits that members receive
from meeting together and sharing their views and experiences.
SEMINARS
Seminars and other events are organised from time to time by
both ABYA and YDSA, and are open to both members and non-members.
Details are published in the Events
Diary on this site and in the Association's bi-monthly newsletters.
Costs vary according to the event.
ABYA
ABYA runs a two-day brokers'
course, Introduction to Brokerage, three times each year. This
is aimed at those who have a little experience probably
around six months working in a brokers' office, and need
to expand their skills and knowledge. For details of the dates
of the next course and a programme, see the Events
Diary on this site.
YDSA
The YDSA has introduced a programme of three Forums per year
that is proving very popular with surveyors. The number of delegates
is limited to ensure they have an opportunity to interact and
share experiences. Each Forum has a specified theme and is led
by an experienced exponent in that field, often from amongst
the Association's own membership. Details are given in the Events
Diary and in the bi-monthly newsletter.
Training Manual
A Training Manual is available and the upgrade examination
for surveyors to move from Affiliate to Associate is set each
year based upon this. A second part to the manual is under development.
The manual aims to provide general information on various aspects
of the surveyor's work. This may be purchased separately or
as part of the application fee for surveyor membership.
Sample report pack
Various styles of report are shown to give guidance, gained
from member surveyors' own experiences, on what needs to be
included in a report and making recommendations. This may be
purchased separately or as part of the application fee for surveyor
membership.
Key requirements
This is a quick reference guide to what should be included
in a report and is used by the Membership Committee to assess
applicants' reports. Free on application.
