Part 1 Registration

Registration on Part I of the British Registry entitles you to the following benefits:
  • Enables you to prove title to your boat
  • Allows you to register a marine mortgage
  • Provides internationally acceptable documentation to ease passage to foreign ports
  • Entitles you to protection from the Royal Navy and the services of British Consuls
  • Can enhance the resale of your vessel
  • Provides proof of date of build in respect of the EU Recreational Craft Directive
  • Ensures that your boat's name is unique on Part I

Registration under Part I requires measurement by an approved Tonnage Measurer. Look at the directories of YDSA surveyors and ABYA brokers on this site to identify an Association measurer to help you.

The cost of tonnage measurement for British registration through the YBDSA is:

Vessel in UK
Under 15 metres overall £150.00
Over 15 metres and under 24 metres overall £195.00

Vessel overseas

Under 15 metres overall £180.00
Over 15 metres and under 24 metres overall £225.00

Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Cayman Islands, BVI and Jersey

Up to 24 metres Please ask for a quote

Guernsey

Up to 13.7 metres Please ask for a quote

Eire By arrangement
For other locations please contact Tricia Hills for further advice

NB: For vessels lying overseas or not local to a measurer, expenses should be negotiated with the surveyor and may, in some circumstances, include the measurer's time spent travelling.

You may register if you are :

  • A British citizen
  • A non-UK national exercising your right of freedom of movement of workers or right of establishment
  • A British Dependant Territories citizen
  • A British Overseas citizen
  • A British subject under the British Nationality Act 1981(a)

Boats need to be re-registered every five years, for which the cost is currently only £46. Delay in re-registration of over a year may result in a requirement for re-measurement.

You can download the Tonnage Measurement application form SUR 6A here.

Further details are available on the Registry site at www.mcga.gov.uk, or contact the YDSA to arrange your survey. Don't leave it until the week before you sail, as both surveyors and the MCA registration office get very busy in the summer months!
