Membership of the YBDSA is open to brokers, yacht
agents and dealers (ABYA) and to surveyors and designers (YDSA).
All members have to carry Professional Indemnity Insurance cover
and maintain their training. Members normally enter at the lowest
grade as an Affiliate.
Brokers are required to submit copies of
their brokerage transaction forms and listing agreement with
their application form for assessment by the ABYA Membership
subcommittee. The subcommittee then makes its recommendations
to the main ABYA Committee, which meets quarterly. Decisions
are ratified by the Association Council and published in the
Newsletter for final ratification by the membership.
ABYA also encourages brokers to protect themselves against liability claims via the ABYA Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme.
Surveyors are required to submit copies
of three survey reports representing the different materials
surveyed by the applicant. The application fee includes a copy of
the Sample Reports Pack and
the Training Pack Block I, together with a list of Key Requirements
against which the submitted reports are assessed. Surveyors
need to be familiar with the contents of the training block
I before taking the upgrade examination to become an Associate.
Applications are assessed as for brokers.
For those thinking of starting a career as a surveyor, see also details of the new YDSA-endorsed yacht and small craft surveyor training course from IBTC, or download a list of training establishments offering a variety of marine courses, many with a surveying component.
Designers are required to submit various
designs which are scrutinised by a Senior Designer member. Designers
will note that we currently have only a few Designer members,
and we would welcome approaches from other designers, particularly
if you have ideas as to how the Association could help you in
your business.
Applications to join the Professional Charter
Association, which is affiliated to the YBDSA, are initially
handled by the YBDSA Secretariat.
No formal qualifications are required to join
the Subscribers group, except that applicants are likely
to be professionally involved in the marine sector and wish
to participate in the Association. Members are mostly drawn
from allied professions such as insurers, marine finance houses,
marine lawyers, engineers, testing and diagnostic companies,
and other organisations such as publishers.
Students, whether at college or training on the
job, are entitled to receive Association information free for
three years.
Application
forms for the various types of membership are available by completing the following:
